About 'debt collector jobs'|Debt Collectors Fighting Laws Aimed At Making Them Do Their Jobs Properly
You might want to be more cautious about placing your trash outside before it's garbage day. Don't assume the garbage man came early when you peek outside and see it's missing. Identity theft is serious, and it's happening every day. A woman placed her trash outside, and very shortly after a man drove up in a truck and took it. At first she didn't know what to think until he pulled up to the neighbors house and picked up their garbage as well. Luckily with some quick thinking she took the license plate number down and called authorities to report this unusual behavior. After running the plate they found that the truck was rented and traced all of the evidence back to one thing: identity theft. If it weren't for that woman's quick thinking and intuition, she might have been yet another victim of identity theft. Rummaging through garbage is one of the popular ways criminals are stealing the identities of others. There is all sorts of information in your trash. Credit card statements, bill invoices, etc. We need to all take the proper precautions to avoid this happening to us. Use a permanent marker and scratch out all personal information on all mail you plan to throw into the trash. Rip it into small pieces or use a shredder to make it less legible for a criminal to piece together. The FTC estimates that over 9 million Americans have had their identities stolen each year. You might not even realize you've been a victim until you receive a credit card statement, or a letter from a debt collector. Identity theft has even been as serious as innocent individuals being arrested for a crime they did not commit or have any knowledge of. There are many ways criminals have been reported to obtain information about an individual. Some of these methods include: Skimming - This is where they steal your credit card information when processing your card. Be VERY careful who you are giving your card information out to. Beware of fake telemarketers. Changing Your Address - They will complete a change of address form, allowing all of your personal information to be forwarded to their home instead. Dumpster Rummaging - As mentioned above, they will dig through your trash in attempts to find any statements or bills with your personal information on them. Robbery - An old-fashioned theft. They will steal your purse, wallet, and in some cases have even bribed employees who have access to your information. Phishing - Criminals will pretend to be a financial institution to obtain your personal information. Beware of E-mails asking for your social or credit card information. According to the FTC, here are some of the most reported cases of identity theft: Utility or phone fraud - They will purchase a new phone or Internet account, or run up the bill on your existing account. Criminals will use your name to get utility services such as electric in their homes. Credit card fraud - They will open a new credit card account in your name and use it to pay bills and purchase merchandise for themselves. Beware, they may even change the address on your card so that you don't receive the bills. Be sure if ever in doubt to contact your credit card company. Bank fraud - Criminals have gone as far as to create counterfeit checks, open bank accounts, take out loans, and clone ATM cards in the victims name. Government fraud - They will get a driver's license or ID card issued in your name, but with their photo. Cases reported have also shown that criminals have used a victims social security number to get government benefits or to file a fraudulent tax return. Other forms of fraud - Other cases include thieves who have gotten jobs using a victims social number, rent a home, and giving police your information during an arrest. Be sure to monitor your accounts and bank statements on a monthly basis. If your identity has been stolen you should immediately file a police report and notify all of your creditors for disputing. Identity theft is a serious crime and these criminals need to be brought to justice. Don't allow someone to have a free ride at your expense. Inform friends and family about the serious results of identity theft. The more people who can become aware of this threat, the sooner we can put a stop to it. Each individual needs to take all steps to ensure their identity belongs solely to them. |
